Summer Reading Round-Up 2024!

So far 2024 has been the year of the competitions, starting with Fairy Tales and Myths with a Twist to celebrate National Storytelling Week. This was won by the amazing Lily, whose clever twist on the story of Persephone and how the seasons were created, was loved by all the judges.

Our “World Book Day “ Wooden Spoon Character competition had over 100 entries and was won by Ava for her re-creation of the Harry Potter characters, even featuring a flying Hedwig! It was so detailed and must have taken hours of work – a real labour of love.

Our last Hub competition was the most hotly contested yet as there were valuable house points up for grabs and the leader board was a very close call. A massive 189 poems were entered with Hawking entering the most and earning some well-deserved house points, followed by Turing, Curie and Sharman. The winning poem, however, was written by Turing student, George, whose beautiful poem “Beneath the Waves” won by a unanimous decision.

Our Pupil Librarians have been making displays to create awareness and inclusion such as Refugee Week, Carers Week, Children’s Mental Health Week and Pride Month. They also run the popular Thursday Manga Club and help with the smooth running of the Library. As we said a said farewell to our year 11s, I will be recruiting some new pupil librarians in September from year 8-10 so if you want to share and promote your love of books, keep a lookout for the advertisement in September.

Finally, A huge “Well Done” to the students who earned 50 literacy points or more with the highest being 87 points, achieved by Lilly in Year 8! Let’s hope we can get over 100 next year!
