Creativity Open Evening

The Arts are an integral part of the curriculum at HTCS. Art, Photography, Drama, & Music are all offered at GCSE and Music Tech: Music Practice is offered at BTEC.  The Arts are valued for themselves as discreet subjects as well as a means to develop and support SEMH in our students and as part of our whole school ethos and culture. We strongly believe that the Arts are crucial in the development of young people into rounded individuals.

All students at KS3 have two lessons of Art, Drama and Music each fortnight.   Throughout KS3 students in all subject areas within the faculty are given the opportunities to develop skills needed for KS4 through a range of engaging topics.

In Art, students will experience drawing, painting, mixed media work, photography, printing and 3D work with Clay. They will look at Still Life, Art from a range of Different Cultures, Architecture and Portraiture.

In Music, students will learn about rhythm and notation, and will listen to and evaluate a  wide range of musical examples from Classical, Pop throughout the decades and World Music. Students get the opportunities to play and perform using a range of musical instruments and begin composing their own pieces.

In Drama students will develop skills in Acting, Devising, Performing and Evaluating. They will explore issues such as racism,  and events such as the sinking of the Tintanic, 911 and World War II.

HTCS has a Creative Arts Academy (CAA) which develops extra curricula activities in the arts. At present pupils are invited participate in a range of opportunities for workshops and performances.  Extra curricular opportunities are available in each subject and a musical is produced annually involving students from Y7-11

The new building has a theatre with raked seating, curtains, lighting and sound/projection and a fully sprung floor to enable our pupils and the wider community to access professional standard equipment and help the performers who wish, to be able to transition easily to further training and performing. A dance studio is adjacent to the theatre, also with a sprung floor and also with mirrors and a barre. We have 4 Design Studios, one of which is equipped with PCs with enhanced graphics for the delivery of Photography. All PC’s have Adobe Software installed.

The college is well equipped to deliver a broad and exciting curriculum within the Arts and students engage well both at KS3 and at KS4.
